On this day in music history: April 9, 1977 - “At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up)” by Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan hits #1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart for 2 weeks, also peaking at #30 on the Hot 100 on the same date. Written by Tony Maiden and Lalomie Washburn, it is the first single from the band’s fifth album “Ask Rufus”. Prior to joining Rufus, Maiden and Washburn along with Rufus bassist Bobby Watson were all members of the band High Voltage in the early 70’s. A few years later, Washburn will reconnect with Maiden and collaborate on “At Midnight” which will give Rufus their third R&B chart topper.
